Keep Sweet

If you are a bookseller of a certain age, you will remember Keep Sweet’s author Michele Dominguez Greene as Abby—Abigail Perkins—on L.A. Law, and although Michelle has continued to act—she currently has recurring roles on HBO’s Big Love and ABC’s Brothers and Sisters—it is her beautiful writing, not her acting, that is certain to create buzz with both booksellers and consumers. Keep Sweet is a gripping teen novel about one young girl’s struggle to escape a forced polygamist marriage. It offers a glimpse into this fascinating group hidden within our society but also deftly explores universal themes of faith, friendship, first love, and identity. Keep Sweet and the story of Alva will stay with you long after you have finished it.

KEEP SWEET is on-sale tomorrow–3/9/2010 ISBN–9781416986812

Joel Osteen & Karl Rove plus Jonathan Alter and Hope Davis in the Studio

Today marks the release of Karl Rove’s eagerly awaited Courage and Consequence – narrated by the author – and Joel Osteen’s original audio program, Living in Favor, Abundance, and Joy. You can listen to an excerpt of Joel Osteen live at http://promo.simonandschuster.com/LivinginFavorAbundanceandJoy/.

In addition, this week our recording studio has been abuzz with authors including Newsweek’s Jonathan Alter, recording his new audiobook, The Promise: President Obama, Year One as well as acclaimed writer Daniel Okrent, recording his upcoming history of prohibition, Last Call. A perfect compliment for the Ken Burns prohibition documentary coming this fall.

And last but not least, Sandra Moore, our VP of Audio Production for the last 25 years retired last week. We’ll miss her leadership and her determination to produce the very best audiobooks in the marketplace. I’d also like to congratulate Grammy and Audie Award-winning producer, Elisa Shokoff, on her well-deserved promotion to VP of Production.

Hector’s beautiful illustrations tell the story of Gentleman Bug a perfectly content school teacher lady bug who loves nothing more than to read. But when a new Lady Bug arrives in town, a librarian no less, The Gentleman Bug falls legs over antennae for her at first sight.

This is a delightful story of love and literature and it is a perfect hand sell!

A SOFT PLACE TO LAND

A Soft Place to Land

With her perfect pitch, sympathetic eye, insight and humor, Susan Rebecca White, author of BOUND SOUTH (Touchstone, 9781416558675), is a rising star in commercial women’s fiction. Her new novel, A SOFT PLACE TO LAND (Touchstone, 9781416558699, April 2010), is a story of sisterhood, loss, love and redemption. After their parents are killed in a plane crash, half-sisters Ruthie and Julia are sent to live with relatives on opposite sides of the country, which strains their close relationship as their lives take divergent paths—until another shocking accident unexpectedly flings them together with a chance to reconcile.

Maybe you remember Susan’s terrific first novel, BOUND SOUTH (Touchstone, 9781416558675). A SOFT PLACE TO LAND is everything you want a sophomore novel to be—just as sharp but also deeper, richer, more resonant. I read it practically in one sitting. It’s set in Atlanta and the Bay Area, and I’ve never been to Atlanta, but I can attest to how exactly right she gets the Bay Area. And it has a great cover, don’t you think?

I’m a huge fan, as you can see, and I’m not alone. Kathryn Stockett, author of THE HELP, says: “A beautiful story of the complicated love between two sisters. Book clubs: This is your next pick. I loved this book.”

The Raves Continue for FLY FISHING WITH DARTH VADER

Matt Labash covers men on the nation’s fringe like no one else. Pirate Kingfish Gov. Edwin Johnson, The Right Reverend Dr. Al Sharpton, Dirty Trickster Roger Stone, Dick Cheney… These American rouges have all been the subjects of Labash’s feature profiles for The Weekly Standard. Full of wit, insight and a trenchant grasp of the American scoundrel, his masterful collection of essays, FLY FISHING WITH DARTH VADER: And Other Adventures with Evangelical Wrestlers, Political Hitmen, and Jewish Cowboys (Simon & Schuster, 9781439159972) just came out in hardcover and has garnered some high praise.

“…Ever since Professor Gonzo took his own life in 2005 (and to a large extent, post-1970s, when his flame of creativity ceased to burn bright), the world has been devoid of an heir apparent, one able to evoke Thompson’s lively blend of egocentric reporting and cutting political satire. With ‘Fly Fishing With Darth Vader: An Other Adventures With Evangelical Wrestlers, Political Hitmen and Jewish Cowboys,’ Labash makes a worthy case for entry into the canon of gonzo journalism elites.” – Roll Call

Esquire says, “Every now and then, a collection of remarkable stories from a magazine writer has the effect of unleashing a significant new voice on an unsuspecting public. Tom Wolfe’s Kandy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby comes to mind. And so it is with Matt Labash’s wonderful Fly Fishing with Darth Vader.”

Matt Labash chronicles the outsized and outrageous characters who populate America’s murky periphery, shedding light on everything from ruined cities such as New Orleans and Detroit, to such political points of interest as Al Sharpton’s eating habits and Dick Cheney’s favorite fishing hole. Don’t miss it!

Lisa McMann’s GONE that is. The third book in the WAKE trilogy went on sale 2/9/10 and the sales are going and going. The first two books WAKE and FADE were both NY Times Bestsellers and GONE will debut at #8 on the very competitive NYT series bestseller list. Lisa is amazing promoter and check out her tour –http://authors.simonandschuster.com/Lisa-McMann/45103601/author_appearances

Hooray for LITTLE BEE!

Hooray for LITTLE BEE!

Tuesday February 16th was the trade paper pub date for Chris Cleave’s amazing novel, LITTLE BEE (Simon & Schuster, 9781416589648). You know it’s one of my favorites and I know that it’s one of yours—I have 35 pages of your responses to LITTLE BEE. You put this book on the map and supported it all year long. We are so excited about the trade paper publication, which we know will extend the novel’s reach many times over.

We’re delighted to say that LITTLE BEE is an Indie Next List Pick in both hardcover and trade paper. In his nomination, Mark David Bradshaw of Watermark Books in Wichita, Kansas, says: “This stunning and compassionate novel brings faraway places near and makes the incredible experiences real. As the story moves from London to Nigeria, you’ll grip the book tightly in your hands and hold its characters close to your heart: a young girl; a tormented, idealistic journalist; and a fearless mother whose fierce love is a wonder.”

We’re thrilled that Barnes & Noble and Borders are similiarly supporting LITTLE BEE so enthusiastically.

You can find all kinds of goodies about LITTLE BEE for your websites and newsletters at www.simonandschuster.com/littlebee. Reading group guide materials, jacket art, a photo of Batman, a video of Chris talking about the book, and more. Be sure to read the letter from Chris to booksellers.

Thank you for supporting this great novel, for putting it the hands of your customers, for making videos and putting LITTLE BEE banners on your newsletters. We are confident that LITTLE BEE will be bestseller for years to come!
